Intro
Brok is an education card game designed to impart new words and enjoyably educate children.
The game comprises a custom deck of cards that can be arranged in a particular but modular sequence. The game’s facilitator, typically the teacher, formulates questions corresponding to each card. When the learner answers a question correctly, they can progress to the next card, which takes them to a new part of the story. What’s particularly appealing about this game is that it allows children to craft their narrative and pathway for the game, all while seamlessly expanding their vocabulary.
Process
While creating this educational card game, my main contribution and focus was on the game’s design. The game was designed and developed over a tight two-week schedule with only four members. I teamed up with a fellow game designer, Max Wierda, to bring this education game to life. We noticed that many learning experiences for kids lacked a lot of things. In other words, they’re pretty boring. They often lack the essential ingredients of joy and creative freedom.

Goal
So, we devised a new, innovative, fun game described above. I worked on every design aspect, including game flow, paper prototypes, and user testing. To our surprise and delight, everything fell into place perfectly. We emerged as the victors in the “Dragon Den” competition, which had been the ultimate goal for every student in our year.

Result
During this project, I learned a lot. I learned a lot about education and serious games, the importance of prototyping, teamwork, and communication. Since this was my first successful group project, we had many hardships, such as two of our team members leaving the group, leaving us with only four people left. Designing an education card game was challenging since it was my first time, and I didn’t know the difficulties it would bring. I learned paper prototyping, and user testing revealed a lot of valuable insight, making it easier to detect and resolve issues early on.
